Lily Tomlin

When I ran the Box Office at the Robert W Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta, Lily Tomlin did her Broadway show on our mainstage Alliance Theatre and liked being in Atlanta so much she stayed an extra two weeks to try out new material in our small Studio Theatre. She was very casual about these "readings" of what later became Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe. We used general admission roll tickets, had only word of mouth publicity and watched her perform new and different material evey night. Lily just said to me "invite all your friends and we'll have some fun"! What a wonderful experience to get to know Lily's creative soul before all the hoopla took over. Several years later I saw the finished production, on Broadway and then in Boston. My job in Massachusetts working with emotionlly troubled kids in residential treatment allowed me to turn their theater group into a dinner theatre fundraiser - Lily was in Boston at the time and sent a signed "good luck to the Harbor School Players" photo. What a thrill for them and for me. I am a huge fan.
